One such case is our Greek gyro potato casserole is definitely one of them, because as soon as it’s in the oven, a truly heavenly scent will waft through your home. The aromas of oregano, garlic, and roasted meat create a powerful perfume that will make you crave the dish even more. We bet it will quickly become a favorite!
So Easy to Make: Our Greek Gyro Potato Casserole
It often doesn’t take much to turn a dish into a vacation. Just one bite of Greek gyro potato casserole and you’ll be thinking of the Greek coast, even if your actual summer vacation is still a while away. That’s because of the herbal aromas of gyro seasoning: oregano, thyme, and garlic which will provide a Mediterranean flair.
Start by cutting the pork into thin strips. Next, season it with gyro mix and fry until cooked through. If you like, you can also use chicken, which will stay nice and juicy. Vegan alternatives will also work, it’s entirely up to you.
You’ll also need thinly sliced potatoes, preferably Yukon Gold, so they don’t fall apart. In a buttered casserole dish, layer some meat, then potatoes, meat, and potatoes again, and season the individual layers with salt and pepper. To prevent the Greek gyro potato casserole from becoming dry, and more importantly, being creamy. Make this casserole’s sauce by mixing heavy cream, sour cream, and some vegetable broth. Once ready, pour it over everything. For the typical golden crust, you’ll need cheese, of course, preferably a mixture of Gouda and mozzarella, which melts and browns beautifully when baked.
After about 40 minutes in the oven, you can take the casserole out. The meat will be nice and tender, the potatoes soft, and the cheese crispy. Serve it with a salad or simply on its own for a true vacation feeling from home. By the way: If you’re in the mood for a variation, you can add bell pepper strips or zucchini, or crumble some feta over it before the Greek gyro potato casserole goes into the oven. Mmh!
