Ready to take your taste buds on an unforgettable culinary journey? Having originated in North Africa but now seen as a staple of Israeli cuisine, shakshuka is a delicious one-pan dish made of a spicy red pepper and tomato sauce served with eggs cooked right on top of the sauce. In our version, we're also adding in some feta cheese to help the flavors of this dish really pop. Shakshuka is traditionally served with pita bread, so we're also showing you a quick, simple recipe so that you can make some yourself. Warm homemade pita, tangy tomato sauce, fried eggs – this dish is perfect any time of the day!
Combine the water, dry yeast, and sugar and then mix in the flour, salt, and vegetable oil. Knead the mixture into a smooth dough and let rise covered in a warm place for 1 hour. After 1 hour, divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll out each piece of dough until it's very thin and place the dough pieces on a baking tray. Transfer the baking tray to a preheated oven and cook at 450°F for 3-4 minutes.
Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat and briefly sauté the onion, garlic, and chili pepper. Add the bell peppers to the pan and cook with the rest of the ingredients until browned.
Add the ground cumin, paprika, and diced tomatoes to the pan and mix well to combine with the vegetables. Cover the pan with a lid and let cook for 20 minutes.
Crack the eggs into separate quadrants in the pan, cover the pan with a lid, and let simmer over medium heat until the eggs have set.
Crumble feta cheese over the dish and garnish with parsley. Serve the shakshuka with the homemade pita bread.
