Winter Bread House Filled With Chocolate

One of the best things in the run-up to Christmas has got to be the decorations, but seeing as we are who we are, obviously we prefer the edible kind. Have you ever spent hours decorating a gingerbread house, just to have it sit on the counter taunting you the entire month of December? Never again thanks to this esculent house of tasty wonders! We're replacing the gingerbread with white bread, slathering it in cinnamon butter, and filling the entire thing with chocolate and bananas. Any fairytale witch would be lucky to get her hands on this architectural masterpiece!

Yield: 1
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cooking Time: 12 minutes

You'll Need:

For the winter bread house:

  • 14 slices of white bread
  • cinnamon butter
  • Nutella
  • 2 bananas, sliced
  • icing
  • cream cheese
  • shredded coconut

For the cinnamon butter:

  • 1¾ sticks butter, softened
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp brown sugar

Here's How:

1. Combine the ingredients for the cinnamon butter, spread some of it over 1 slice of white bread, and turn the bread over onto its buttered side.

2. Cut another piece of white bread into 5 pieces – 3 rectangles of the same size will be used for the windows and 1 larger rectangle will be used for the door (you can eat the leftover square because you won't need it).

3. Place the door bread piece on the unbuttered side of the slice of bread with cinnamon butter and spread some cinnamon butter around the door.

4. Spread cinnamon butter over 3 more slices of bread and flip them over. Place a window bread piece in the center of each slice and spread cinnamon butter around the windows.

5. Spread cinnamon butter over 3 more slices of bread and cut 1 slice in half diagonally for the front and back roof pieces. Place all 8 pieces of buttered bread (6 whole slices and 2 halved slices) on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

6. Cut the crusts off 6 slices of unbuttered bread and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

7. Transfer the baking trays to a preheated oven and cook at 350°F for 12 minutes.

8. Remove the window and door bread pieces and let the toast cool.

9. Spread Nutella over 1 piece of unbuttered toast, top with banana slices, place another piece of unbuttered toast on top, and lightly press down. Continue layering in this order with the rest of the unbuttered pieces of toast until you get a 6-tier toast tower filled with Nutella and bananas.

10. Trace the silhouettes of the windows and door on the buttered slices of toast with icing. Put some more icing along the edges of the crusts and glue the buttered toast slices together around the Nutella banana toast tower to make a house.

11. Heat some Nutella and pour it over the Nutella banana toast tower inside the bread house.

12. Use the icing to glue the front and back roof bread pieces to the bread house.

13. Spread cream cheese over 1 of the discarded crusts and the last 2 buttered slices of toast, sprinkle shredded coconut on top, and glue them to the house with icing. Use more icing to decorate the winter bread house.

This is one house we would all be happy to live in! Why not surprise your loved ones with this unique and totally tasty idea, and who knows, this twist on the classic gingerbread house with bananas, Nutella, and cinnamon butter might just become your new favorite Christmas tradition!
