Check out this spinach bread that will make you as strong as Popeye

White bread, rye bread, whole-grain bread: the variety of breads available at the supermarket can seem vast at times! But one kind of bread that you'll rarely find at your local grocery store is spinach bread. Two worlds come together with this special bread: the crunchiness and the softness of bread combines with the healthy nutritional properties of spinach. And the best part is that your kids are going to love it...

You'll need the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. honey
  • 7 oz. spinach
  • 1 egg
  • 3 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/4 cups wholewheat flour
  • 1 package or 1/4 oz dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 tsp. vegetable oil

And here is what you do:

First, add the milk, salt, honey and the washed spinach leaves into a blender or a container that's suitable for an immersion blender.

The egg is added at the end.

The spinach purée is placed into a large mixing bowl, then the two kinds of flour, the yeast and the softened butter are added.

Now it's time to knead the dough. A food processor with dough hooks would be perfect here. But of course you can use your hands as well.

Sprinkle 2 tsp. of vegetable oil into the bowl and then rub it around using the dough. Then the dough has to proof for at least two hours - don't forget to put plastic wrap over the bowl for this part so that nothing dries out.

Once it's roughly doubled in size, knead it again.

If you have two smaller loaf pans, there will be enough dough for two loaves of bread. But a large loaf is also possible, of course.

Then off it goes into the preheated oven at 350°F. Bake for 30 minutes.

When the crust is nice and golden brown, take it out of the oven.

Cut into lukewarm slices and...

Bon appétit!
