Penne Pasta With Italian Sausage In A Homemade Bread Bowl

If you could only have bread OR pasta, which one would you choose? Ooooh, that's a toughie for the die-hard carb lovers out there! Thank goodness you won't actually have to choose because we have a recipe that combines both. Yep, you read that right –our delicious pasta, which features Italian sausage and an aromatic tomato sauce, is served in a perfectly doughy bread bowl for the utmost convenience. It's a dream come true!

You'll Need (for 2):

For the bread bowls:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup water, lukewarm
  • 1 whisked egg yolk for the egg wash

For the pasta:

  • 6 oz penne pasta
  • olive oil to taste
  • 4 oz Italian sausage
  • 6 oz tomatoes, chopped
  • 10 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, sliced
  • 1 tsp chopped rosemary
  • 1 tsp capers, chopped
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 mozzarella ball, torn into pieces
  • arugula to garnish
  • grated parmesan to garnish

Here's How:

1. First prepare the bread bowl. Knead all the ingredients into a smooth dough and refrigerate covered for at least 2 hours. For best results, refrigerate the dough overnight.

2.Preheat the oven to 400°F and cook the pasta in lightly salted water until the water has evaporated. Add the olive oil, sausage, tomatoes, onion, garlic, rosemary, and capers, before tossing in the mozzarella pieces and seasoning with salt and pepper.

3. Roll the pizza dough into a circle – it should be slightly bigger than the pot in which you cooked the pasta. Brush the egg wash around the edge of the circle and place the dough on the pot, pressing the edges firmly to the edge of the pot. The steam inside the pot will cause the dough to rise. Once the dough has risen enough, transfer the pot to the oven and cook for 15 minutes.

4. Trim the edges of the cooked dough with a knife and flip it over. Pour the prepared pasta in the finished bread bowl and garnish with fresh arugula and parmesan cheese.

Feel free to mix things up when it comes to the pasta. Whether you opt for stringy linguine or an indulgent vodka sauce, it's guaranteed to come out tasting great if it's served in a bread bowl!
