Chocolate Potato Chip Cake

Sweet and salty is the ultimate flavor combination when it comes to desserts. Who wants pure sugary sweetness without that kick of salt to balance out the flavors? Elvis Presley certainly didn't – that man loved himself a banana peanut butter bacon sandwich. He was definitely ahead of his time! If you also want to experience a unique sweet and salty taste explosion, then give this chocolate potato chip cake a try! It's got the sumptuous and sweet richness from the chocolate cake, with an added salty crunch from the chips. Delicious!

You'll Need:

For the chocolate cake:

  • 4 egg whites
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¾ stick butter, softened
  • 4 egg yolks
  • ½ cup flour
  • ⅓ cup corn starch
  • ⅔ cup cocoa powder
  • ⅓ cup milk, lukewarm

For the chocolate frosting:

  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
  • 1½ cups cocoa powder
  • 2½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 cups cream cheese, room temperature

Extra:

  • 6-inch round cake pan
  • potato chips

Here's How:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Beat the egg whites and sugar until frothy and set aside for later. Combine the butter with the egg yolks, then add in the flour, cocoa powder, and corn starch. Gradually add the milk as you're mixing all the other ingredients, and then fold in the beaten egg whites. Transfer the batter to a greased cake pan and bake for about 40 minutes. Let the cake cool and then cut it into 3 equal layers.

2. Combine the melted chocolate with the softened butter and add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar. Stir in the cream cheese and mix until everything is smooth and combined. Transfer the frosting to a piping bag.

3. Pipe the frosting in a spiral shape on one the bottom cake base and crumble potato chips on top.

4. Place the second cake base on top of the chips and pipe another frosting spiral on the cake. Crumble more chips over the frosting and place the third cake base on top.

5. Spread the remaining frosting all over the cake. Use a star-shaped nozzle to pipe 6 rosettes on top of the cake. Decorate the sides of the cake with a "Pringle Ringle" (overlapping Pringles in a circle) to form a ring around the cake. Sprinkle a few chip crumbs in between the rosettes on top of the cake.
