Chocolate Fondue Cake

Chocolate cakes with some sort of melted, ooey, gooey center have become a true staple over the years. After all, who wants dry chocolate cake? And as much as we love a good lava cake, we figured there was still room for improvement. That's why we came up with this epic chocolate cake with a liquid chocolate fondue center. Yeah, we're not kidding around – this cake has a whole chocolate fondue center, perfect for dipping fresh fruit, marshmallows, or whatever else your heart desires!

Yield: 1 cake
Prep Time: 75 minutes
Baking Time: 60 minutes
Difficulty Level: Moderate

You'll Need:

For the chocolate cake:

  • 1⅔ cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup hot water
  • 1½ cups cocoa powder
  • 2½ cups flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder

For the chocolate fondue:

  • 1⅔ cups milk
  • 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • 3 tbsp corn starch
  • ⅔ cup milk chocolate chips
  • ⅔ cup white chocolate chips

Extra:

  • 8-inch springform pan
  • 6-inch bowl
  • baking beans
  • aluminum foil
  • fresh fruit, marshmallows, and bread for dipping

Here's How:

1. For the chocolate cake, first mix the hot water and cocoa powder together. Add the sugar, eggs, and vegetable oil and beat this mixture before stirring in the flour and baking powder. Grease the bowl and fill it with baking beans. Wrap the bowl in aluminum foil and place it upside down in the center of a tall, greased springform pan.

2. Pour the batter into the springform pan and bake in a preheated oven set to 350°F for 60 minutes.

3. Allow the chocolate cake to cool, then flip it over and carefully remove the springform pan and the bowl. Straighten the edges of the cake if needed.

4. Mix the heavy cream, corn starch, milk, and sweetened condensed milk and heat the mixture in a saucepan. Pour the mixture over both types of chocolate chips and stir until both chocolates are completely melted. Pour the 2 types of melted chocolate into the cake from opposite sides.

5. Use a wooden skewer to create patterns on the melted chocolate and serve the chocolate fondue cake with fresh fruit, marshmallows, and bread for dipping.

This truly extraordinary chocolate cake sets itself apart from most lava cakes – what's not to love?!
