Apple Streusel Cake

The number of apple cake recipes out there are endless, and most people swear by a family recipe that have been passed down from generation to generation. But why bake the same thing over and ver again when there are so many other delicious options to choose from? This dessert, for example, features a whole pan full of apple turnovers topped with a sweet and crumbly streusel that will leave you begging for more!

You'll Need:

For the yeast dough:

  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 4 cups flour
  • ¼ stick butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

For the apple filling:

  • 5 apples
  • ¼ stick butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

For the streusel:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1¼ cups flour
  • 1 stick cold butter, cubed

Extra:

  • 1 whisked egg for the egg wash
  • round pie pan

Here's How:

1. To prepare the yeast dough, first dissolve the sugar and salt in warm milk. Mix the yeast and flour together on your work surface, form a well in the middle, and pour the milk mixture into the well. Add the egg and melted butter and knead everything together. If the dough is too runny, add some flour. If it is too dry, add some milk. Then add the vegetable oil and continue kneading the dough. Grease a bowl with oil, place the dough ball inside, cover it, and let sit for 60-90 minutes. Meanwhile, peel the apples and cut them into small cubes. Sweat the apples in butter in a pan over medium heat for 3-5 minutes and stir in the cinnamon at the end.

2. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare the streusel by mixing the flour, sugar, and butter together.

3. Divide the dough into 7-8 equal pieces and roll each piece out into a circle slightly smaller than the size of the pie pan.

4. Reserve half of the streusel for later. Take the the rest of the streusel and sprinkle some along the bottom of each dough circle.

5. Fold the circles together and sprinkle some streusel on top.

6. Spoon some apple filling onto the left and right sides of the semi-circles.

7. Roll the edges in from both sides so they meet in the middle.

8. Place the finished apple turnovers in a greased pie pan.

9. Brush the egg wash over the apple cake, sprinkle the remaining streusel on top, and bake for 45 minutes.
