CHEESEBURGER CASSEROLE

INGREDIENTS

  • 12.5 oz short pasta (e.g., fusilli, elbow macaroni or penne)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Some neutral vegetable oil (for frying and for the sauce)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup tomato puree
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 2 tsp mustard
  • 1 ½ cups diced pickles
  • 1 ½ cups cheese slices of choice
  • 1 ½ cups grated cheddar
  • 2 white onions
  • 1 handful cherry tomatoes

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cook the pasta according to package directions in plenty of salted water.
  2. Heat enough oil in a pan and fry the ground beef until crumbly. Season with salt and pepper to. Stir in the ketchup and tomato puree, bring to a boil. Set the pan aside.
  3. Melt the butter in a separate saucepan and mix thoroughly with flour using a whisk until a smooth paste has formed. Let it fry for about two minutes.
  4. Gradually add milk and water and stir the sauce constantly so that no lumps form. Season with mustard, salt and pepper and stir in one cup of the diced pickle.
  5. Spread the pasta in a baking dish.Pour the sauce over it and cover with the cheese slices. Now add the ground beef sauce and evenly cover with the grated cheddar.
  6. Bake the casserole for 20 minutes, until the cheese is golden brown and melted.
  7. Meanwhile, peel the onions and cut them into rings. Wash the tomatoes and cut them into slices.
  8. Garnish the casserole with the onion rings, tomato slices and remaining pickle slices.
