Grilled Onion Bombs Stuffed 6 Different Ways

The onion is a frequently used vegetable that's oftentimes misunderstood. Mostly stuck being a sidekick or limited to supporting roles, the onion rarely gets to enjoy the spotlight it truly deserves. To do our part and make sure that the onion gets to share all of its many layers with the world, we've come up with 6 recipes that bring the onion front and center! These delicious grilled onion bowls are stuffed to the brim with a whole range of different fillings and then grilled to absolute perfection. From teriyaki chicken to Philly cheesesteak, there's something here for every-onion!

1. Teriyaki Chicken Onion Bomb

You'll Need:

  • 1 large onion
  • 2 oz chicken breast, chopped
  • 1 scallion, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 3 tbsp teriyaki sauce
  • ½ tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 pinch of sugar
  • pepper

Here's How:

Cut the top off of the large onion to create a small lid and hollow out the inside with a spoon. Stir together the chopped chicken breast, chopped scallions, minced garlic, teriyaki sauce, sesame seeds, sugar, and pepper and spoon the mixture into the hollowed-out onion. Place the lid on top of the onion and transfer the teriyaki chicken onion bomb to a muffin pan.

2. Philly Cheesesteak Onion Bomb

You'll Need:

  • 1 large onion
  • 2 oz steak bites
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced
  • ¼ red onion, chopped
  • 1 slice of provolone

Here's How:

Cut the top off of the large onion to create a small lid and hollow out the inside with a spoon. Stir together the steak bites, sliced jalapeño, salt & pepper and spoon the mixture into the hollowed-out onion. Sprinkle red onion over the steak mixture and top everything off with a slice of provolone. Place the lid on top of the onion and transfer the Philly cheesesteak onion bomb to the muffin pan.

3. Caprese Onion Bomb

You'll Need:

  • 1 large onion
  • ½ tomato, chopped
  • 1 tbsp pesto
  • ¼ cup shredded mozzarella
  • salt & pepper to taste

Here's How:

Cut the top off of the large onion to create a small lid and hollow out the inside with a spoon. Fill the onion with a layer of chopped tomato, pesto, and shredded mozzarella, then season with salt & pepper. Place the lid on top of the onion and transfer the caprese onion bomb to the muffin pan.

4. Pork Tenderloin & Pear Onion Bomb

You'll Need:

  • 1 large onion
  • 2 oz pork tenderloin, chopped
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • ¼ pear, diced
  • crumbled gorgonzola cheese

Here's How:

Cut the top off of the large onion to create a small lid and hollow out the inside with a spoon. Chop the pork tenderloin, place it inside the hollowed-out onion, and season with salt & pepper. Add the diced pear and crumbled gorgonzola cheese, place the lid on top, and transfer the pork tenderloin & pear onion bomb to the muffin pan.

5. Onion Bomb Stuffed With Southern Baked Beans

You'll Need:

  • 1 large onion
  • thick-cut bacon, chopped
  • ¼ cup baked beans
  • sliced chili pepper
  • salt & pepper to taste

Here's How:

Cut the top off of the large onion to create a small lid and hollow out the inside with a spoon. Stir together the chopped thick-cut bacon and baked beans and spoon the mixture into the hollowed-out onion. Sprinkle the sliced chili pepper on top of the bean mixture, place the lid on top, and transfer the stuffed onion bomb to the muffin pan.

6. Italian Sausage & Fennel Onion Bomb

You'll Need:

  • 1 large onion
  • ½ Italian sausage, sliced
  • 1 mushroom, chopped
  • chopped fennel
  • sliced lemon
  • salt & pepper to taste

Here's How:

Cut the top off of the large onion to create a small lid and hollow out the inside with a spoon. Slice the Italian sausage and place it in the hollowed-out onion, then add in layers of chopped mushroom, chopped fennel, and thin slices of lemon. Place the lid on top of the onion and transfer the Italian sausage & fennel onion bomb to the muffin pan.

Position pieces of charcoal to the left and right sides of the grill, light the charcoal, and place the muffin pan in the center of the grill so that the onions get cooked from both sides. Cover the grill and cook the onion bombs for 20–30 minutes.
