3 Fun Bread Recipes To Make With Your Kids

How many kinds of bread can you name off the top of your head? Most people will probably say white bread and rye bread... and then there will be a long pause while they struggle to think of more. But the great thing about bread is that no matter what kind you decide to make, there's an endless possibility of options when it comes to the presentation, as can be seen in the following three recipes that will appeal to every age group.

1. Watermelon Bread

You'll need:

  • 12½ oz flour
  • 2 oz sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 5 g active dry yeast
  • 5 fl oz lukewarm milk
  • 2 oz soft butter
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • 1 egg
  • red and green food coloring
  • raisins

Here's how:

1.1. Mix the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a large bowl and pour the milk on top. Then add the butter, tomato paste, and egg and start mixing everything with your hands. Remove about ⅔ of the dough and dye it red. Take ⅔ of the remaining dough and dye it green. Leave the rest of the dough plain. Smooth out the dough in each bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and leave in a warm place. Add the raisins to the red dough and mix in. Then knead all the dough balls one more time.

1.2. Roll the red dough out into an elongated shape. Take the yeast dough, roll it out into a square, place the red dough log inside, and then roll it up. Finally, roll the green dough into a square, place the double roll log inside, and roll the entire thing up.

1.3. Place the dough in a loaf pan and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. If the some spots begin to brown too quickly, cover the top of the pan with aluminum foil.

2. Panda Bread

You'll need:

  • 12½ oz flour
  • 2 oz sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 5 g active dry yeast
  • 5 fl oz lukewarm milk
  • 2 oz soft butter
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • 1 egg
  • red and black food coloring

Here's how:

2.1. Mix the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a large bowl and pour the milk on top. Then add the butter, tomato paste, and egg and start mixing everything with your hands. Remove about ⅓ of the dough and dye it black. Take a small portion of the remaining dough and dye it red. Leave the rest of the dough plain. Smooth out the dough in each bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and leave in a warm place.

2.2. Roll the plain dough into a square. At one end, place a very long thin roll of red dough, roll it over one time, and then cut off this "double roll." Repeat the process with the black dough.

Then place these double rolls, with the black on top of the red, in the middle of the dough square and lay a slightly thicker black roll on either side. Fold the plain dough over so it meets in the middle and then place two more blacks rolls on both sides on top.

2.3. Place the dough in a loaf pan and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. If the some spots begin to brown too quickly, cover the top of the pan with aluminum foil.

3. Owl Bread

You'll need:

  • 12½ oz flour
  • 2 oz sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 5 g active dry yeast
  • 5 fl oz lukewarm milk
  • 2 oz soft butter
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • 1 egg
  • red, yellow, and brown food coloring

Here's how:

3.1. Mix the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a large bowl and pour the milk on top. Then add the butter, tomato paste, and egg and start mixing everything with your hands. Remove about ⅓ of the dough and dye it red. Take about ¼ of the remaining dough and dye it brown. Dye the rest of the dough yellow. Smooth out the dough in each bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and leave in a warm place.

3.2. Make two thick rolls from half of the yellow dough and place them next to each other. Then place a thinner brown roll in the middle. Cover with a very thinly rolled yellow square of dough. Then place three very thin rolls of yellow dough on top.

Roll a thick brown roll up in a thinly rolled red dough rectangle. Repeat the process and place the two double rolls between the thin yellow dough rolls. Then put a thicker yellow roll between the red rolls.

Wrap everything in a thinly rolled out yellow dough sheet, followed by a thinly rolled out red dough sheet.

3.3. Place the dough in a loaf pan and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. If the some spots begin to brown too quickly, cover the top of the pan with aluminum foil.

Watermelon bread, panda bread, owl bread — which one should you eat first? The choice is entirely up to you!
