Nutella originally got its start in Italy in 1946. Because cocoa was rationed during World War II, chocolate was in short supply, and so bakery owner Pietro Ferrero used hazelnuts as a substitute, which are plentiful in the Piedmont region of Italy. The concoction was originally shaped into a loaf and could be sliced and served on bread, but by 1951, a creamy, spreadable version had been introduced. In 1964, Ferrero’s son, Michele, tweaked the recipe and the Nutella we know and love was born!
The delicious spread made its way to Germany in 1965, and the Germans immediately fell in love with the chocolatey goodness. The following year, Nutella hit the French market, where it was also an instant hit, and so the pattern continued and Nutella eventually became a global sensation. In fact, Nutella is such a beloved product that it even has its own day of recognition, known as World Nutella Day, which is celebrated annually on February 5th.
