M&M's Surprise Cake: You're In For A Real Treat!

If you're searching for the perfect children's birthday cake, you can now stop and relay. Our multi-colored surprise cake that's cheap to make will bring joy to children of all ages!

You'll need:

For the batter:

  • 4 eggs
  • 8.8 oz soft butter
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla flavoring
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • red food coloring

For the filling:

  • at least 14 oz M&M's

For the cream cheese topping:

  • 1½ cups cream cheese
  • 3.2 oz soft butter
  • 1⅘ cups icing sugar

For the decoration:

  • approx. 14 oz M&M's

Here's how:

1. For the batter, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Then halve the mixture. Color one half with the red food coloring. Before you put both lots of batter in separate springform pans (diameter 7 - 8.5 in), place a food can in the middle of one of the pans. In this pan, spread the plain-colored batter around the can. This will leave a cylinder-shaped gap for the filling later. Put the red-colored batter in the other pan and then bake both for 25 minutes in the oven at 320°F.

2. Once the pans come out of the oven, leave them to cool before removing the cake. Cut the red cake in half horizontally using a large sharp knife.

3. Beat the butter together with the cream cheese, and then add the icing sugar. Next, spread the lower half of the red cake with a ring of cream cheese icing, but don't put any in the center. Then place the plain cake ring on top of the icing and fill the hole in the center with M&M's. Then spread another layer of cream cheese icing on top of the plain cake ring. To complete the structure of the cake, place the second half of the red sponge on top.

4. Now cover the cake completely with an even layer of the cream cheese icing. It's important that the icing covers the whole of the cake, because you will need it to fix the M&M's in place in the next step.

5. The second portion of M&M's provides the finishing touch for this recipe. Arrange them in a pattern of your choice on the top and around the sides of the cake. On top, for example, you can set them in the icing in circles according to their color.

The particular charm of this cake is that, not only does it look like a colorful celebration cake, but after the first cut you get to enjoy the surprise of the filling inside. And if that's not enough, when it comes to making a tasty cake, you can't go wrong with a classic sponge, cream cheese icing and chocolate!
